Brotato Primal Dread Character Tier List: All 10 Jungle Characters Ranked

This Brotato Primal Dread character tier list ranks all 10 DLC characters for Danger 5 solo runs, with unlock steps, Evolution paths, and beginner picks.

Brotato Primal Dread Character Tier List at a Glance

Brotato: Primal Dread launched on November 2, 2026 for PC at $3.99, shipping the Jungle map, 20 new waves, 17 weapons, 40 items, the new Evolution stat, and 10 new characters. This Brotato Primal Dread character tier list ranks all 10 newcomers for a solo Danger 5-style win with ordinary shop luck — the same standard Brotator's character tier list applies to the base roster. Character stats reflect in-game values from update 1.2, as documented in Brotato Builds' complete Primal Dread DLC guide.

S and A Tier: The Strongest Primal Dread Characters

S Tier

  • Droid converts your material wallet into a health bar — damage drains materials instead of HP, and you only die when the wallet hits zero. With materials flowing constantly on Jungle waves, Droid is effectively unkillable early. Every level-up grants a Mecha part and +1 Evolution at each wave's end, powering the weapon-mechanizing Mecha path. The trade-offs are real: you get no level-up stat choices and enemies gain +5% damage each level, but the snowball outruns the penalty.
  • Arsonist is a pure burn build — Melee, Ranged, and Engineering modifications are reduced by 100%, so all scaling rides on % Damage and fire effects. In exchange, explosions leave fire puddles dealing 4x4 (+100%) burning damage, and half of all enemies that die while burning leave another puddle. The Jungle's dense dinosaur stampedes keep the ground permanently ablaze, and new tools like the Molotov Cocktail, Flare, and Wildfire Mutation give the build plenty of fuel.

A Tier

  • Mad Scientist feeds both Evolution sides simultaneously and gains +2 Evolution per wave — the fastest ramp in the DLC. The cost is a stacking -5% XP penalty at the end of each wave and enemies evolving into either camp, which makes runs less predictable.
  • Variant mutates an item automatically at the end of every wave, with a 50% chance the mutating item is replaced by a better-tier version. Item duplication compounds faster than the -25% XP penalty hurts.
  • Archaeologist is the DLC's safest economy: four dig sites per wave, +75% materials from recycling crates, and +3% XP per crate. The -50% reduction on enemy drops forces you to play the digging minigame, which is the point.
  • Survivor equips up to eight weapons instead of six and gets +25% crate chance, but there are no weapons in the shop and enemy materials drop 25% less. Build-around, yet eight online weapons is enormous damage.

B and C Tier: Powerful but Demanding

  • Veteran (B) has the highest raw damage ceiling in the DLC — +1% damage for every 1% of missing health — but zero forgiveness: no HP restoration between waves, -100 HP Regeneration, -100% Life Steal, and no fruit attraction. Plus 2 extra Horde waves every 10 waves means more materials and more ways to die. One mistake spirals.
  • Time Shifter (B) gets a panic button that shifts time when hit, and scrambled wave order can sidestep difficult spikes. Unfortunately, Dodge modifications are reduced by 100%, cutting off the most forgiving defensive stat, and the mechanic demands good positioning to exploit.
  • Poacher (B) scales to +3% damage for every 15 enemies killed inside a hunting area, but enemies there drop 50% fewer materials, and the playstyle requires camping a debuff zone instead of kiting freely.
  • Caveman (C) is the hardest character here: ranged weapons are banned, an obscuring fog thickens every wave, and you must burn your own weapons to see through it — though burning grants primitive weapons tier-based bonus damage. Needs fossils unlocked and melee-only discipline.

For context on the older roster, G2A's 2026 Brotato character tier list keeps pre-DLC standouts like Farmer, Demon, and Renegade in S tier — and update 1.2 buffed Farmer again with a starting Garden.

How the Evolution Stat Changes the Rankings

Evolution is Primal Dread's defining mechanic: you raise it by picking up drops on the map, enemies visibly evolve with each point, and you earn a bonus based on the path you feed. Since half the new characters lock into a path, it directly shapes this tier list.

Mecha PathMutant Path

Mecha rewards shop manipulation — dismantling mechanized weapons in the shop returns even more parts — while Mutant rewards item-count greed. Mad Scientist feeds both at once. Commit to one lane per run unless you're playing the Scientist; split pickups slow both bonuses.

How to Unlock Every Primal Dread Character

Veteran, Archaeologist, Droid, Time Shifter, and Variant are available immediately. The other five require specific feats:

  • Caveman — equip 5 fossils in a single run. Fossils span tiers 1 through 4, so buy every Fossil piece (Tooth, Jaw, Skull, and the limbs) the shop offers across one run.
  • Arsonist — have 12 fire puddles on the ground at the same time. Spam Molotov Cocktails and Flares into dense packs; killing burning enemies adds more puddles.
  • Poacher — kill 20 different enemy types in the Jungle. This accumulates naturally over a few full runs given the map's large dinosaur roster.
  • Survivor — pick up 10 crates in a single run. Archaeologist's dig sites produce crates on demand, making this the easiest combo unlock.
  • Mad Scientist — win a run with Variant, then win a run with Droid. Since both are unlocked by default, this is just two competent victories.

Console and mobile versions of the DLC are planned for early 2027, and the base game is required to play it.

FAQ

How many characters does Primal Dread add?

Ten. Veteran, Archaeologist, Droid, Time Shifter, and Variant are unlocked by default; Caveman, Arsonist, Poacher, Survivor, and Mad Scientist must be earned through unlock feats.

What is the best Primal Dread character for beginners?

Archaeologist. It's unlocked from the start, its dig-site economy is forgiving, and the +25% pickup range makes material collection painless while you learn the Jungle's new enemies. Droid is stronger but punishes poor material management.

Do these tier placements hold up in co-op?

Not always. Brotator notes that co-op changes several placements on the base roster — support-adjacent characters like Streamer and Chef climb significantly — so treat this list as a solo ranking.

Does Primal Dread include the Wounded and the Railgun?

No. Both came with the free All Pain No Gain update in May 2026, alongside the Nightmare difficulty above Danger 5. The Wounded is unlocked by winning a Nightmare run and needs no DLC purchase.
